Two of Clayton-Bradley Academy's Girls' Doubles Teams started the season off with a bang Tuesday night at Heritage High. On a tough day for everyone in their singles matches, the doubles matches proved to be the bright spot of the night. Two of the seniors led the way, in Captain Emily Wheeler and Izzy Miya, by winning their first doubles match of the season 9-8. Izzy had some great serves and Emily had many violent return smashes of the ball, scoring multiple points. Wheeler explained her feelings on the doubles match, "Izzy and I have always worked really well together. This match was a perfect example. Izzy has great serves and ground strokes and I play well at the net, which makes for an awesome duo. But, ultimately, we could not have finished out our match and won if it weren't for our persistance. With such a close game and at times, falling behind, it would have been easy to have given up, but instead we persevered and came out on top." Miya described their first night back to playing, "Yesterday's game was exciting to see how we would perform against other schools after being coached by Coach Z. I think as a team we all improved and each of us gained some confidence in our abilities. Emily and I were ready to win our doubles match and were determined as soon as we walked on the court. It was a long game to the tiebreaker, but we stuck it out and won. Our teamwork and knowing the strengths and weaknesses is how we are able to work so well." Juniors Cailey Martin and Hannah Rasmussen also won their first ever doubles match together, 4-3. "They have a really good repore with each other on the court. I like them together. I am proud of them," Coach Z declared.
Coach Z shared her thoughts after her teams' first night, "I was proud of how the entire team played. They all gave their best to the matches. There has been vast improvement in the last 6 weeks, especially to our newer players. One quoted she just wanted to win a point, but actually won a game! There were some really good points. I saw a glimpse of what may be. They are working hard to improve. The biggest thing is their positive attitude, even after a loss. This did not set them back, but gave them incentive to work harder and improve."
