The Middle School Blazer Volleyball Team won their quarterfinal match last night against Concord Christian in the KISL "Gold" Bracket. They won 2-1, with scores of 19-25, 25-14 and 15-6, outscoring the Lions with a total of 59-45. Concord Christian got off to a hot start serving and hitting in the first set. The Blazers hung in there and made it close. The start of the second set was the turning point of the night. CBA got up early and did not look back. Their defense grew more confident to receive Concord's tough serves and CBA's serves came through, yet again, as it has all season to help them seal the victory. They had girls step up and make winning plays for their team. The most memorable example was Millie Lieb finishing the night off with a couple of serves in a row. The win sets a record now of most wins in a season for any Clayton-Bradley sports team, with 9. The team's 8th win in a row also made them the first volleyball team to win a tournament match.
Coach Cheyenne Burnett was so pumped about the big win her girls fought for, "In the first set you could tell the girls were a little nervous. They were making silly mistakes that we do not normally see them make. Even with all of that, the first game was still close. I told them, 'Girls, we gave away so many points and still almost won. Imagine what would happen if we played to our full potential.' That is exactly what they did! We have been hammering home with them that when we get up on a team we need to keep our foot on the gas and keep the momentum. Last night was the first time we really saw them do that and they could see that difference as well."
She also mentioned their teamwork and leadership, "This group supports each other so well and it really shows on the court. Haylee Munsey really saved us last night with her serves, scoring multiple in a row in the second set. That was a big reason that we won. Mia Adkins being all over the court was huge as well. She took charge during play and during timeouts, which was great to have on a night like tonight. When the girls talked after, that was one of the things they mentioned that helped push them through to the finish line. I could not ask for a better team!"
The Blazers, the #4 seed, move on to the Semifinals Tuesday night, September 29th, to play at Saint John Neumann, the #1 seed. Be sure to be there, or watch live on the school's Facebook page at 6:30.
