The Clayton-Bradley Middle School Soccer team came out victorious in an instant classic on Thursday evening. The Blazers traveled across town to Maryville Christian and had a full time battle. Maryville Christian got up on a Penalty Kick and finished the first half with a 1-0 lead. A sidenote to point out is that CBA's defense and Keeper Katia Biegalski have only been scored on in PK situations the past two matches. CBA felt pretty good about their play offensively as well becasue they had multiple shots on goal, they just had to adjust and finish. Late into the second half, with just a few minutes remaining, Faiz Boghani got the ball in the middle, just at the top of the box, and scored with a floating kick over the keeper's outstretched arms. Both teams failed to separate themselves from there, so they went into extra time tied at 1-1, where the drama would intensify.
After the 15 minute extra period the score was still tied 1-1, so the teams went into a best of 5 shootout. Each team selected their shooters and it was just them on the field with the keepers. CBA was up first. Lark Miller started The Blazers off with a strong kick and goal into the high left of the net. The Eagles shooter stepped up and sent one into the net as well, tying the extra kicks at 1-1. Faiz Boghani stepped up next for CBA and continued his hot streak on the night, with another goal. Katia Biegalski stopped the next Eagle try, as it came right to her. This put CBA up 2-1. Andrew DeMarchis was up next for The Blazers. He had put in work with Coach Perkey recently on kicking into the net, and it paid off, as one of the school's group of 5th grade athletes put it past the keeper to give CBA the 3-1 lead. Biegalski stopped Maryville Christian's next try as well. Now all The Blazers had to do was score on one of the next two tries and stop The Eagles and they would seal the win. Another 5th grade soccer standout for CBA, in Nick Disney, stepped up to the ball and connected with confidence past the keeper, low and outside into the net. Crazy celebration insued as the Blazers pulled off the win with the 4-1 score in extra time shootout kicks!
Coach Josh Perkey shared his excitement, "Our team never gave up and came from behind again to earn a win. This was our second game where our offense put enormous pressure on the opponent's goalkeeper, and our defense was strong down the middle. Our game captain, Lark Miller, stepped into the Stopper role with Elle Etheridge assuming Sweeper duties. Together, their speed and strength were a brick wall. Tevy Magnuson made an impact with several deep runs from his midfield position into the opponent's penalty area. Hats-off to Faiz Boghani who played a supporting role today, and came off the bench to score the equalizing goal. We practice penalty kicks, and I think it paid off. All of our shooters scored, and our goalkeeper, Katia Biegalski, came up huge stopping TWO penalty kicks in a row to help clinch the win."
CBA has now won two in a row, with two matches remaining before tournament play in the KISL.
