We love our coaches at Clayton-Bradley Academy and we want you to know how awesome they are. So, we decided to do a series of articles called, "Hey Coach." We are starting with our teams who are currently in season. Right now they are practicing at home, with the safer at home order in place. Our 15 student upper school tennis team is being led by our coaches through meeting weekly via Zoom and sharing workouts and skill practice ideas through email. Coach Nick Davis and Assistant Coach Natalie Woliver are doing a great job during this time with their team. Nick Davis started as the assistant coach in 2018 under then head coach and now CBA Assistant Director, Kendall Terry. Terry was his coach at Heritage High School. This is Davis' second season as the head coach at CBA. Natalie is in her first season as assistant coach and is Davis' fiance. Below is what they shared about their tennis experience.
We asked, "Hey Coach Davis, could you tell us about your tennis experience?" Davis explained, "I didn’t pick up tennis until my junior year of high school and wanted to play for fun. However, I quickly fell in love with the sport and started taking it more seriously. I lettered in tennis my final two years at Heritage High School, served as a team captain, played No. 1 seed and was named the 2012 MVP for the Mountaineers. I went on to college at Carson-Newman University, where I eventually became a member of the varsity squad at the NCAA Division 2 level. I’ve competed in several United States Tennis Association tournaments and still love to play when I can.
My favorite experience with tennis has been meeting my fiance and assistant coach Natalie Woliver. We first met on the courts at Heritage High School when I was a senior and she was the freshman girls No. 1 seed. We met up again a few years later and immediately rekindled our passion for the game together. We are now set to get married May 15, 2021 — all thanks to God and a little bit of tennis.
Two of my favorite coaching memories were our final match last season when we picked up our first overall team win of the season against South Doyle and when our girls team defeated Maryville two years ago on their home courts."
We asked, "Hey Coach Woliver, could you tell us about your tennis experience?" Woliver described her experiene, "I have been playing tennis since 4th grade, so 13 years. I have played at several tennis facilities, as part of the Junior Association of Tennis Professionals tournaments. I played 3 years in middle school (#1 seed my 8th grade year) at Heritage Middle School and played #1 seed all 4 years in high school under Coach Terry at Heritage High School. Then I went on to play intramural tournaments at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
One thing I love about my tennis experience is that everything has come full circle so to speak. My mom played tennis as the #1 seed when she attended Heritage High School, so it was awesome to be able to follow in her footsteps and fulfill that role as well. Also, I met my now fiancé (Coach Nick Davis) while playing tennis at Heritage my freshman year, so it’s awesome to look back and see that 8 years later we are now getting married and coaching together!"
We are thankful for these great leaders of our tennis program. What an awesome story of what athletics can do for someone's life!
