The Clayton-Bradley Academy Middle and High school cross country teams had a strong showing at their first official meet on Saturday at Victor Ashe Park for their Annual Fall Classic. Middle schoolers Bria Moynihan, Lydia Simmons, Elise Schaur, and Luke Bacon all set new personal bests in the 2-mile race, and Claire Bollschweiler set a CBA girls’ record for the Victor Ashe course. In the high school race, Bentley Larsen, Ava Graves, Grayson Steinbach, Addie Rittenhouse, and Brennan Steinbach all set new personal bests for the 5k; Lyle Webster and Dustin Henderlight broke the previous CBA course record; and Dustin Henderlight ran the fastest 5k of any CBA runner ever with a time of 18:38! From the newest runners to the most experienced, the Blazers demonstrated incredible perseverance.
Coach Sarah Bollschweiler explained her happiness, "The highlight for me was not witnessing the breaking of records, as exciting as that can be; it was observing the way the athletes supported each other during the meet. I saw our high school boys darting from place to place to cheer on the girls, even after all of the boys were undoubtedly exhausted. I watched from behind the starting line as the middle school girls gave last-minute racing advice to their male teammate, who was about to run the course for the first time. I smiled at the wonderful photos that our parents shared with each other in our group texting app, many of them not of their own children but of every CBA runner who passed by. Our cross country community is tight-knit, supportive, and great fun. This community is one of the most important factors contributing to our success."
The Middle School Cross Country team heads to the beautiful Cove Lake State Park for their next meet on Thursday at 6. The High School team will be in Sequoyah Hills neighborhood Park for The Cherokee Classic on Saturday at 9:45.
