26-0! That was the final score for Clayton-Bradley's first win of the season, coming in a shutout against Sacred Heart's "Maroon" team in the Blazers second game of the season. It was a tough first game against a very athletic Knoxville Christian team, but Coach Starkey was pleased with his team's effort and attitude in that one, a game where they did not back down, scoring twice and making some great plays for a team that is playing together for the first time, since they did not get a season last year. The game against the Knights set them up for the dominating performance that they showed on Thursday night against the Eagles.
The Blazer defense on the night was the key to victory. Assistant Coach Dan DeMarchis' schemes and quick adjustments allowed just two Sacred Heart first downs the entire game! Jacob Rutherford led the way with 4.5 sacks and Konnor Kirkland was close behind with 3. On the offensive side of the ball there were many game changing plays. August Burger started the game off with a bang, running for 43 yards. That drive was capped off by Asher Wagner's leaping grab from Quarterback Michael DeMarchis in the corner of the end zone for the first touchdown on the night. The Blazer's passing attack is a good one this year and has shown that it will be one of the best in the league after two games. Wes Williams, Grey Andresen and Michael DeMarchis also scored touchdowns. This was all made possible by the offensive line of Jacob Rutherford, Logan Robbins and Carson Meyers. They gave up zero sacks, had zero penalties and opened up opportunities for nearly a 100 yard rushing game.
5th year Coach Nick Starkey shared his thoughts on his 2021 team, "This team is serious in preparation. The feeling is different this year. There is more talk in the classrooms and hallways. Our vets are doing the little things right and teaching the new players. This is what you want, a player led team, all the way. Our 8th grade captains, Konnor Kirkland, Jacob Rutherford and Michael DeMarchis are the standard bearers, all of them coming to us with CBA athletics and leadership experience. Konnor and Jacob are now 4th year football vets and it shows."
The Blazers hit the field again Monday night August 30th at Sacred Heart against their "Gold" team. Be sure to come out and cheer for CBA this season! They are fun to watch.
