Clayton-Bradley faced off against Gibbs High in their first home match of the season Thursday at The Springbrook Tennis Courts. It was a blustery 45 degrees, with the wind blowing and the sun trying to peak out from behind the clouds. But, the heat from the Blazers grew from Tuesday's match to their matches against the Eagles Thursday. It was visible that the guys and girls had those first match nerves out of the way. Junior Hannah Rasmussen got the first singles win of the season for CBA, winning her match 8-2. She did a great job of putting the ball in tough spots for her opponent, creating a visible frustration that ended the match quickly. Rasmussen shared that she was focused on getting the win in a unique way, "I knew I could win my match today, and that made me even more nervous. Coach Z told me to sing songs in my head to try and get rid of the nerves. Let's just say that I sang a bunch of songs. It felt good to get that win."
Senior Hannah Robbins then followed through with her own first win on the season as well, with a score of 8-5. She outworked her opponent and came through in a match that was back and forth, until Robbins tired her opponent and came out on top. Hannah was excited with the outcome, "My match today was proof of adapting to the game. Although it was a cold and windy day, my biggest challenge was playing an opponent almost equally matched to me in skill. Through Coach Z's helpful feedback and tips, I was able to persevere through the final points of the match and adapt to my strengths and my opponent's weakness." The dynamic doubles team of Seniors Emily Wheeler and Izzy Miya continue to impress. Their hot start continues, improving to 2-0 on the season, with a dominating score of 8-2.
Coach Z shared her thoughts on her team's second outing of the season, "I saw good progress today, especially Abby and Hannah in doubles. The boys were competitive with all but Gibbs top three players. They did well. There is still room for improvement, but today they were not as nervous as they were Tuesday. You can tell they are gaining more confidence in their playing."
