The High School Girls Tennis team got their easiest win of the season on Thursday night, as they defeated Everett 8-1. Even amidst the windy conditions, and different doubles lineups, The Blazers persisted in what they have been focusing on in their games and cheered each other on for their 5th victory. They are now 5-5 on the season and are one step closer to their win goal of 7. Coach LuAnne Zelasko was pleased with how her team handled themselves in a different situation, playing a growing first year team and different doubles teams, "I was very pleased with all of our girls singles players, especially Cailey and Abby. Everyone has improved in creating good shots."
Two of the best moments of the night both involved Junior Cailey Martin. Senior Captain Emily Wheeler and Martin won the #1 Doubles match in a comeback tiebreaker, 9-8. Coming through in her toughest Doubles match of the season, Cailey was excited as she came off the court, "That was my first doubles win of the year. I was so exhausted, but so happy!" She then reminded Athletic Director Grant Redmond, Coach Z and the team of the promise that if she won a Singles match this year, she would get her own personal cake at the banquet. With her confidence at an all time high and her smile getting bigger and bigger as the match went on, Martin pulled through with an 8-3 win! She made her opponent play the whole court with her focused shots. As she walked off the court she exclaimed, "I like Lemon or Red Velvet Nothing Bundt cake!" The Sophomore continued to glow, "I really enjoyed playing tonight. Playing with Emily was great because we just get along really well and hype each other up. That vibe carried over into my singles match. I tend to get in my head a lot, so the support from the rest of the team and the coaches was great."
Sophomore Abby Becker got her first Singles win on the season as well, defeating her opponent 6-0. "She was so proud to go over and move the ball up the scoreboard. She had a lot of confidence going into that match and you could tell that she played differently because of it. It was great to see for her," Coach Z explained. All of the girls showed grace against a younger program and poise in playing their game. They are now focused on hitting that 7 win mark, with 2 matches remaining.
For the boys, they lost 6-3. But, Seniors Chase Walsh and Kai Camacho continue to do well in their matches on the season, both winning their singles matches against The Bulldogs. Camacho also won his doubles match with Sophomore Brantly Headrick, giving him his first win of the season.
